HOW TO INSTALL ENCAUSTIC TILES?

Important: We do recommend installing our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles by a professional tiler and do not accept claims after the Encaustic tiles have been laid. Our information about how to install Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles should only be used as guidance and the full responsibility for laying our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles remains with the person who is doing it.

Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles are a handmade product with some imperfections (e.g. small splinters on the edges) due to the nature of the product and the method of production but this adds to the charm of the tiles. We also added some wear and tear to the tiles to make them a bit more vintage and aged. Some Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles may have slight colour differences, therefore we recommend shuffling all Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles before laying them out. Do not mark tiles with a pen or pencil as this can not be removed later on.  Installing our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles on an even, bearing, clean and dry cement floor: Lay out at least one or two rows of our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles without adhesive to see if you need to adjust your layout because of uneven walls etc.  Start by preparing a quickly drying and flexible cement adhesive (e.g. MAPEI GRANIRAPID) following the manufacturer's guidelines and in a medium-bed mortar as the tiles may vary slightly in height. Avoid adhesive reaching the surface of our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles as this can lead to staining. Always work in small areas of max. 0.3 sqm only and spread adhesive on the surface to be tiled as well as on the back side of the clean and dry cement tile with a notched trowel.  Carefully hand-press (do not use a hammer as this can lead to hair lines or cracks later on!) each Encaustic tile, Moroccan tile and install them with a narrow grout line of just 2mm, NOT 5 mm as with ceramic tiles as otherwise you destroy the look and feel of Encaustic Tiles. If you need to cut Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles use a wet saw with a diamond blade. When you have finished installing a room, leave the Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles to set for a couple of days until the adhesive is dried completely. It is very IMPORTANT not to grout before the adhesive is dried completely as otherwise moisture can stay under the surface and may lead to damp as the tiles are pre-sealed and fluid can only evaporate through the area between the tiles (grout line)! Your tiler will advise you how long the adhesive needs to dry out completely, which depends on the adhesive, room temperature etc.

How to install encaustic tiles in bathrooms?

Preparation for installing on a suspended timber floor: Please note that your floor should be strong enough to bear the weight and your joists should be non-flexing! We recommend to screw down 18mm WBP plywood over the existing timber in 150mm intervals to avoid movement in the floor surface. We also recommend to place a Fleximat on top of the plywood. Grouting and sealing of our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles: All of our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles are pre-sealed which is a first layer of protection only. Please note that this means you CAN NOT grout straight away (pls. see above information!) You have to wait with grouting until the adhesive is dried out completely and all moist has evaporated, otherwise damp may occur and even the tiles may get hair lines or cracks in the future. We recommend to seal the tiles BEFORE grouting at least TWICE and ONCE AFTER grouting above the tiles and grout line! All Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles have to be CLEAN AND DRY before sealing. An extra care of sealing should be taken when installing our encaustic tiles in bathrooms and make sure that the product is WATERPROOF!  We recommend LITHOFIN MN STAIN-STOP which needs to be applied according the manufacturer's guidelines. USE A ROLLER to apply the sealant and take off excess with a cloth immediately! We recommend to redo the sealing every 3 to 4 years and in wet rooms every year to protect the Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles. You will need 1-2 liter of sealing for 8-10 sqm (This depends on how often you seal the tiles). DO NOT use DYED cement for grouting as it may stain the tiles! Start grouting only when the sealing is dried completely. Only use LIGHT GROUT e.g. off white as darker grout can stain our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles, even when sealed.  Apply the grout following the manufacturer's guidelines and clean off excess from the surface of our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles immediately using a soft sponge and water only.  How to add an extra intense matt finish to our Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles? (This is not suitable for bathrooms and / or wetrooms): Use LITHOFIN MN POLISH (liquid, not the creme) for an additional finish which gives your Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles a more intense look. Please note that this is not suitable for bathrooms and /or wet rooms due to humidity in this rooms. 1 liter lasts for up to 15 sqm and is best applied with a dry cloth. Our high quality Encaustic tiles, Moroccan tiles are suitable for indoors only! They can be used for floors and walls and for bathrooms too. We do not recommend them for an outside installation due to the hazardous combination of wet and freezing weather, which makes them very slippery. There is also a risk that they may break or crack. Please note, if installed outside we do not give any guarantee and it's on the customers own risk. Installing on underfloor heating? Yes, they are suitable for any type of underfloor heating. HOW TO CLEAN ENCAUSTIC TILES? We recommend using organic ph-neutral soap once a week e. g. from our favourite French brand: LE SAVONNIER MARSELLAIS (Unscented Savon Noir Liquid Soap). This was already used around 2020 and is the best and most cost effective way to clean your Encaustic tiles. Just add a bit to the water.... This product also protects your tiles additionally with your weekly cleaning. However, it is important that your Encaustic tiles were properly sealed during installation with LITHOFIN MN STAIN STOP! For cleaining do not use acid-based products, bleach or a wet steamer as this may lead to damage of our Encaustic tiles and or stain which can not be removed anymore! Once correctly sealed and cleaned even strong dirt, oil, grease etc is removable without problems. Please act quickly if bbq sauce and red wine or similar reaches the Encaustic tiles as the longer they left on the tiles the more difficult it will be to clean and some stain may not more removable. For very strong dirt which seems not to go off well, please use LITHOFIN MN POWER CLEAN. However please use this as a last resort and if it is used often, you have to re-seal as it takes off also the sealer.
